Fiber-optic overtakes cable in 2008 so far.

Its official, more people this year have signed up for fiber-optic broadband internet service then for cable internet service.
4.2 million customers signed up for fiber-optic service while cable having only 2.5 million customers, according to Point Topic. Most of these new subscribers are in China, Japan, Korea and the U.S. Fiber-optic connections are faster than DSL or cable but setting up these networks are very expensive. Verizon Communications is the only major U.S. company to offer fiber-optic connections all the way to subscribers homes. As a whole cable is still the more common way to connect to the Internet with about 79.6 million users worldwide compared to 42.1 million fiber-optic connections. Broadband is still the most common way to reach the Internet 238.1 million households using DSL worldwide.
